I am in a group for people who are “young” when they have a total hip replacement. Young isn’t defined but I’m definitely not the youngest, by a long shot, at 37. Reading about the things people are doing with their lives after THR is mindblowing.
So I decided to make a list of things I have never done (or have attempted but aborted) because of my disability:
- ride a bicycle
- ride a horse
- ice skate
- stand up paddle
Most of the people in my group didn’t have lifelong disabilities before their surgery, but rather were very active and suffered injury as a result, so I know I won’t end up as well off as they are. But, if I’m even able to do, like, one of these things after my surgery I will be so thrilled with the outcome.
It’s so hard for me knowing that there are people out there who can do all of these things and don’t even realize what a privilege it is.
